The Federation of West Africa Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FEWACCI)in conjunction with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) as well as Commonwealth Review (CR) are organizing a high level policy roundtable on the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
It will be recalled that the GDPR came into force on the 25th of May, 2018.
According to Babatunde Bamigboye Esq, the Secretary, GDPR Summit, the regulation, inter alia, imposes strict obligations on all persons and organizations conducting any transaction with European citizens and residents to the end that the right to privacy of such citizens and residents are respected.
“In line with the provisions of the GDPR, relevant organizations all over the world are now under a new obligation to study the GDPR so as to improve on their personal data management operations and also avoid the grave penalties attached to non-compliance.
“As responsible stakeholders in the African region, we are examining this GDPR vis-à-vis our extant data protection regulations particularly within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member states.
“This will enable us to extend the same measure of right to our own citizens and other nationals living within the ECOWAS common market”, Bamigboye emphasized.
While fielding questions from Chamber Telegraph, he also said the roundtable is the first in a continuum of steps they will be taking to shed more light on the matter.
He also said the high level policy roundtable which is strictly by invitation will hold on 14th of August 2018 at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja. The time schedule is 10 am.
Participants are drawn from: Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation; ECOWAS Commissioner for ICT; European Delegation, Office of the National Security Adviser; Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment; Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency; Central Bank of Nigeria; Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission; British Council; United States Agency for International Development; Corporate Affairs Commission and Federal Road Safety Corps.
